This is a variation of Incan Gold played with a standard deck of playing cards. Recommended for 4 or more players, supporting 2–8 players.
In the depths of the temple, treasures might await—or traps might spring. Will you take one more step forward, or retreat with the treasures you’ve already secured?
Prepare the following three types of cards from the deck:
Shuffle the 13 Trap Cards and 16 Treasure Chest Cards together face down to form the deck. Set the 5 Artifact Cards aside.
For the gem tokens, use 20 unused cards from the deck, placed face down (each representing 5 gems). Use a separate deck with a different back design for individual gems, where each card represents 1 gem (see illustration).
At the start of each round, shuffle the lowest Artifact Card into the deck, then begin the exploration phase (any player may flip the cards).
At the end of the round, remove any Artifact Cards that were revealed and the trap card that ended the round (if the game ends this way) from the game. Shuffle the remaining cards back into the deck for the next round.
The game lasts 5 rounds. The player with the highest total treasure value at the end wins. Gems are worth 1 point each, and Artifact Cards are worth their face value.
If four players are exploring and a J (worth 11 gems) is revealed, each player receives 2 gems (take 2 gem tokens), and 3 gems are placed in the communal pile. If two players then retreat simultaneously, they split the communal gems evenly, each taking 1 gem, leaving 1 gem in the pile.
